Importance of research and development in the field of Bioinformatics is indispensable. The Bioinformatics lab in Bahria University not only provides Bioinformatics solutions in Pakistan but works in collaboration internationally. Bioinformatics is in evolutionary phase of establishment in Pakistan. The lab is aimed to enhance research and development work in Bioinformatics by the development of protein visualization novel software tools, design of biological databases, integration of heterogeneous biological databases, analysis of microarray data, study of biological networks (specifically the Gene Regulatory Network), and protein structure prediction.

Most of the Bioinformatics problems need massive computing power. All round the world Bioinformatics labs are supported by High Performance Computing Environment like Supercomputers, Cluster of workstations, or Grid solutions. In Bahria University we have our locally developed High Performance Computing Environment by using PC class machines clusters. We are using cluster of 8 workstations for genome level sequence alignment, and protein secondary structure prediction project. In future we planned to extend our work for mining significant data from biological networks like metabolic networks, signal transduction networks, gene regulatory networks and protein protein interaction networks.

We are not only using MPI based cluster, we have also developed cluster with different topologies like tree and cube. Performance comparison has to be done soon.
